Welcome to Want/Need, a weekly roundup of the things our Deputy Editor, Emily Popp, is currently coveting. It might be a pair of pink leather loafers that make her feel like she’s got her s*#t together, or a pool float in the shape of an avocado (because she’s not over the novelty pool float trend). Or maybe it’s as random as, like, dryer sheets. Basically this is all the stuff she’s obsessed with. Poppy’s picks, if you will.
Big Gay Ice Cream Pints
When I lived in NYC, my apartment was around the corner from Big Gay Ice Cream, one of my favorite spots to get a sweet treat. There isn’t an LA outpost, but now to my delight, they are coming out with pints of ice cream available in select grocery stores in the Northeast and California. Along with their ice cream being available in stores now, they also have three brand new flavors: Banana-o-Graham, Fluffernutter and Spicy Choco-Lit. Our team here at HG was lucky enough to sample these flavors during an office ice cream social the other week, and let’s just say spirits were high. It was like we were a bunch of kids let loose in a candy shop. Every flavor got high marks, but of the new flavors the Banana-o-Graham was the biggest surprise hit. It’s like that old school banana pudding with wafers that I hadn’t had in years…only better. I’ve been having an INTENSE sweet tooth lately. It’s bad. I’ve been craving sweets all the time. And these dramatically delicious flavors hit the spot.
J.Hannah Jewelry Akoya Nail Polish
This nail polish line from jewelry designer J.Hannah is totally unlike most nail polish brands I’ve seen. All the colors are unusual for polish shades; no reds or pinks in sight. Instead there are hues like “artichoke” or “marzipan.” I feel like it’s the nail polish a cool AF NYC art gallery curator would wear. My favorite color from the line is “Akoya,” which is a beautiful shade of luminous oyster shell. It’s gorgeous, and it’s not a shade you’ll find in the beauty aisle at the pharmacy, let’s put it that way.
Sabatier 12-Piece Knife Set
The last time I bought a knife set I made the grave mistake of choosing the cheapest one on Amazon. It was like cutting something with a bar of soap. The quality of the knives just weren’t good, but I somehow managed to use them for years(!) before realizing I’ve got to upgrade my knife situation. Finally I got rid of those ratty old knives, and I was like, how was I living like this?! I would highly recommend this 12-piece set from Sabatier, which at under $100 is pretty reasonable for a 12-piece, high quality set of kitchen knives. It has the “Amazon’s Choice” stamp of approval, which I find is a reliable way to decide between stuff on Amazon. For the most part, I’ve had really good luck with the “Amazon’s Choice” items.
Artifact Uprising Brass Easel & Calendar
Time to kick it into high gear if you haven’t bought a Mother’s Day gift, y’all. It’s right around ze corner. The favorite gifts I give my mom always involve a photo or some type of “memory keepsake.” I could just print her out pictures of my Instagram, and she would be happy. She doesn’t have an Instagram account, and always complains about wishing she could see my photos. I love the look of this brass easel calendar that you can personalize with 12 of your own photos—such a simple but lovely gift idea.
Zoe Alexandria Stone and Tag Gold Rose Quartz Necklace
I’m not a big jewelry-wearer, so I don’t feature jewelry all that often—but I do love an understated necklace. I like my jewelry to be dainty; you won’t find me in a statement necklace or chunky bangles. I’ve recently gotten into the whole “crystals craze,” and so I love this rose quartz pendant from Zoe Alexandria. Bonus: you can get it personalized with your initials.
Golden Road Brewing Spiked Agua Fresca Sampler Pack
I love agua fresca, and I always order it whenever I’m at a Mexican restaurant. I had never heard of canned aqua fresca until I tried Golden Road Brewery’s spiked version—which is like regular agua fresca… but way better. It’s only 4% alcohol and low-calorie, which I like—but it’s still got a zing to it and it’s ultra refreshing and doesn’t leave me with “beer bloat.”
